Compared to most other fandoms, gamers are extremely vocal and passionate people with high standards and expectations of the games they buy. Because of this, games can quickly become universally hated if developers make even a few bad decisions.

From unfinished disasters to paid nightmares like the recent Diablo Immortal, some games are hated by gamers. However, in some cases, it’s not even because the game is bad. Sometimes it’s quite good and popular, but people always find reasons to play them.

No Man’s Sky (2016)


When No Man’s Sky was announced in 2013, players were quickly captivated by its beautiful art style and the promise of fresh, innovative gameplay that allowed players to explore an infinitely rich universe in their very own spaceship. However, the game turned out to be too good to be true as it lacked much of the previously promised content.

Upon release, there was virtually no multiplayer functionality, and its gameplay was incredibly monotonous with little variation in the types of planets to explore. With its $60 price tag, gamers felt cheated and lied to when they finally got to play the game they had been looking forward to, and as such it became hated very quickly. Since then, however, the developers have brought huge updates to the game that have significantly improved its gameplay, but players won’t soon forget its disastrous release.

During the few weeks, Cyberpunk 2077 turned out to be riddled with bugs and suffered from severe performance issues, especially on consoles. On top of that, the physics and AI left a lot to be desired, especially compared to similar, older games like Grand Theft Auto. The developers have since updated Cyberpunk 2077 several times, which has improved its quality somewhat, but it still struggles to live up to expectations.

Those who decided to try the game when it was released found that Diablo fans had every right to be mad because this is a pay money win. Unfortunately, those who play the game without spending any money will find themselves ridiculously overwhelmed by players who do. Designed as a reboot of the franchise, the game sought to utilize the best parts of previous 3D Sonic games while expanding on the lore of the series with players being able to play as Sonic, Shadow, and a new hedgehog called Silver. The game was an utter disaster, however, with poor level design, clunky controls, and ultimately uninviting gameplay. The game’s storyline also featured a romance between Sonic and a human that fans have been trying to erase from their minds since 2006. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition saw three of the all-time classics GTA games remastered and brought together in a single collection. When news of the game’s development hit the internet, fans were thrilled to see San Andreas and Vice City again with updated graphics.

However, the game was criticized even before its release when all versions of the games in the collection were pulled from online stores. Additionally, fans were extremely disappointed with the game’s performance issues, bugs, and “updated” ugly graphics. This meant that players who spent extra money on gambling had a huge advantage over players who didn’t. Perhaps more than any other, Fortnite is the game players really love to hate. The free-to-play battle royale is still popular on Twitch and has remained the biggest name in gaming since 2018.

Despite its immense popularity, Fortie is often the object of much hatred. One of the reasons for this is its constant influx of offers and brand collaborations that essentially turn the game into a giant billboard constantly passing through different promotions. On top of that, the game’s cartoon-like graphics can be incredibly off-putting to players who like more realistic shooters, especially when paired with its goofy emotes. Despite the hate, the game has to do something right because it doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.
