Classic Lord of the Rings Video Game Mod Hit With Copyright Notice – Eurogamer.net

We don’t just mod in Mordor.

A Lord of the Rings themed mod for Total War: Attila has been hit with a copyright notice.

The mod in question is Rise of Mordor, and it’s been around for eons. And yet, the same week that the Lord of the Rings movie and game rights also went on sale, Warner Bros issued a DMC takedown request to its developers. Interesting timing.

In a statement (thanks, Game Watcher), the developers of Rise of Mordor say: “…we have received a message from ModDB maintainers that Warner Bros has sent them a DMCA takedown request to remove Rise of Mordor from their databases We are grateful to ModDB for giving us the time to get our affairs in order before the page was taken down.

“As far as we know, this has to do with copyright infringement, as Warner Brothers owns the rights to create games related to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. At the same time, we don’t know not the specific reason triggering their intervention, since we are a modification for an existing game and a non-commercial project.

“We have emailed the Warner Brothers Intellectual Property team and are currently awaiting some form of response, as well as a way to continue uploading our work here. Our developers are still in good shape and you will see previews coming soon. we’re sure you’ll enjoy!”

In the meantime, the Rise of Mordor team is considering rebranding and finding a name that won’t greet them with another copyright notice.

And yet, despite all this, the mod still seems to be available for download on Nexus Mods. However, it remains to be seen how long it will stay that way.
